Holland America Line on Jan. 29 disembarked a passenger "prior to sailing for non-compliance with the mandatory passenger emergency drill."

I suppose they are right to do this under the present climate but it seems a bit harsh to me....Why did the passenger miss the drill?

Well - you are told it is mandatory!

We have friends that we go with on P&O sometimes and they never go to the drill so they need to look out as they go this month with P&O

WELL DONE HAL. those people who brag about not going { and I have heard many } would be the first to scream and shout for COMP. if anything happens !
I think it should be done on all ships !!

Flora - well said.

Surely it is not beyond the wit or imagination of cruise lines to conduct roll calls and with no exceptions including back to back situations.

Good grief what is it with people it takes, what , 30 mins if that out of the cruise.. why hide in your cabin !! what is the point of it....
we get there early ... get a seat near the door so we are first in ... and can be first out...

how hard is it?

good for Holland America

I cannot say good for HAL until I know why the passenger missed the Safety Drill....If they missed it because they couldn't be bothered to turn up then fair enough....good on HAL....but we are all very quick to condemn these passengers without hearing their side of the story.....maybe they had a good reason for not showing up and are in fact being harshly treated.

Karen, I have read that HAL have now introduced roll-calls so that could be why the passenger was found out.

Realistically, for HAL to 'bounce' a passenger off a ship, for non attendance at a muster, they must have been 100% sure of their reasons, facts and figures, given the certain glare of adverse publicity, that such mistaken actions would attract, if they'd got it wrong??

Just because your not at muster doesn't mean you'd be in your cabin, the passenger could have been anywhere...lol

Bearing in mind that all of the musters that we've taken part in always occur about 1 hour before departure, it's hard to believe that they found the offending passenger and managed to 'disembark' him before sailing...

I'm not saying I don't believe the original posting, just seems a bit far fetched to me.....lol

When I first started cruising, I recall musters being held at your assigned lifeboat, before sailing, and there was always a roll call taken.
Gradually they gravitated indoors and no roll call.
It is not a hardship to give up 30 minutes for the sake of yours and everyone elses safety.

Our fire drill at work didnt invlolve a roll call the fire brigade say its quicker to check the building.. so fire wardens had areas to check and report to the main warden. They do the same on board... its quicker to check areas are empty.. so the cabin stewards may have to check their cabins... and if they found someone in theirs then they would know they hadnt attended. Seems harsh to put them off for that BUT I wonder if they were then asked to go to the muster station and then '' words'' were exchanged !!!!!!!!!! hummmmm there must be more to this

Paul IF it is true ---and Bearing in mind it is an AMERICAN ship and the COMPO !! situation -they would have been 100% sure of the Reasons ! because they would know if they were wrong they would have been sued !! so it would have been cast iron before they bumped Them -----I also wondered if there had been bad behaviour or drink involved !!-------------------That is why I said GOO FOR THEM !!

Your welcome mate I wondered if it was just another ship urban myth at first.
